How the program is structured
Here is the complete path to the Class 5 licence, as set out by the SAAQ. Twelve theory modules and fifteen on-road sessions, spread over four phases.

Waiting periods
These waiting periods are set by the SAAQ and apply to every driving school in Quebec. That's why it pays to start early.
5 weeks
Before you turn 16
You can register and start the theory phase five weeks before your birthday, so you can get your learner's licence as soon as you turn 16.
28 days
For phase 1
This is the minimum time between the first and last module of the theory phase required for the learner's licence.
10 months
Before the theory test
You must wait ten months after getting your learner's licence before taking the SAAQ theory test.
12 months
Before the road test
Twelve months must pass between the learner's licence and the road test that leads to the probationary licence.
The four phases explained
Phase 1, theory
5 modules
The vehicle, the driver, the road environment and high-risk behaviours. The phase ends with the theory test. Passing it qualifies you for the learner's licence issued by the SAAQ.
Phase 2, guided driving
2 modules and 4 sessions
Your first time behind the wheel. You learn basic manoeuvres in simple settings, along with accompanied driving and the OEA strategy.
Phase 3, semi-guided driving
3 modules and 6 sessions
More demanding manoeuvres in a variety of settings. We cover speed, alcohol and drugs, and sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists and heavy vehicles.
Phase 4, independent driving
2 modules and 5 sessions
Fatigue, distracted driving and eco-driving. We review the whole program and prepare you for the SAAQ road test.
